Microsoft pushing to create a separate business unit within large IT cos driven by cloud adoption

New Delhi: Microsoft is pushing ahead with a strategy to create a separate business unit within large IT companies in a major drive for accelerating the India business, driven by cloud adoption. Called the ITeS 360 solution, the business unit helps in selling the entire stack of Microsoft offerings raging from AI solutions to business applications to customers of IT companies which may be spread across the globe.

The business unit leader housed inside the IT company makes sure that the local Microsoft office in that particular location helps rolling out the solution, said Anant Maheshwari, president Microsoft Corporation in an interview to ET adding that this is a major overhaul in terms of strategy when the local Microsoft official would only be concerned with sales at the India operations. Country’s largest software services firm Tata Consultancy Services and third largest firm HCL Technologies are some of the large players who have already partnered with Microsoft on this initiative.

Maheshwari said that this is part of the ‘one Microsoft’ strategy which is a brainchild of Satya Nadella. The India Nadella – who is Microsoft’s global CEO is expected to visit India later this month, news agency Reuters reported on Thursday.

Maheshwari said that Azure is really on a high growth clip in the country, and nearly “doubled” in 2019. The company is now moving forward to deploying new business models in India and one of them is IteS 360.

“IT is today roughly a $180 billion dollar industry. There is a significant value that they can provide in driving cloud solutions as part of this $180 billion. That’s what they’re doing when they go and drive digital transformation in different parts of the world. They need cloud solutions and Microsoft is able to provide them with not just cloud solutions but also with very significant value adds like data, artificial intelligence, modern workplace solutions like business applications, etc.”

He added that there was no real scale that existed in the companies earlier. “But they have now understood the power of the go-to-market that we provide around the world.” Maheshwari said that for instance, one of the largest IT majors in India could be in 10 different geographies wants to call on 15 different customers. In every one of those geographies, a local Microsoft person works with them to go an address the business problem together. “So they get the power of Microsoft in all of those 10 geographies. We have a a business unit leader inside their company who is able to drive this.”

He added that revenues derived through this strategy is becoming a significant part of the revenue line of these companies and therefore they see this as a growth area for them.

Talking about the business growth in India, Maheshwari said that 2019 has been a break out here for driving the cloud growth in the country. “We have really done tremendous work across our segments of the enterprise, commercial side, public sector, government side and also on the small and medium businesses where a lot of good work has happened on the cloud. Just to give you a sense today, we are the number one cloud player in the country.”

He added that to take this momentum forward, Microsoft is going to focus on new customers — by targeting unicorns and small and medium enterprises, new solutions – which put the entire stack of Microsoft together including Office 365, Azure Cloud and Dynamics 365 and new business models such as the IteS 360 one.
