Election 2019: Jo Swinson humiliated as protester dressed as BEE ambushes campaign bus | Politics | News

Activists donning colourful costumes “stuck” themselves to the Lib Dem’s bus and shouted for the party to fight for the environment. In footage posted on Twitter, they can be heard exclaiming “we need a new form of democracy” and “climate action now!” while rallying around the bus making a buzzing noise. The campaigners donned yellow and black bee suits complete with wigs and feelers. Ms Swinson is due to take her campaign to a youth club in south London this morning as the election race enters the final week. One Twitter user said the “un-bee-lievable” stunt would no doubt have “stung” Ms Swinson’s day of campaigning.

Meanwhie Jeremy Corbyn was left red-faced after his plan to confront Donald Trump over the prospect of the NHS being included in trade talks flopped when he was kept away from the US President at last night’s Buckingham Palace reception.

The Labour leader has attempted to smear Boris Johnson’s election campaign by claiming leaked documents prove the government is willing to “sell out” the national health service in a post-Brexit trade deal with the Americans.

The socialist had laid out his intentions to tell Mr Trump “none of our public services are for sale” including the UK’s “precious” NHS in a series of interviews before the royal event.

But when Mr Corbyn arrived the Queen’s reception for NATO leaders, as NHS staff led protests outside the gates, he was directed away from the president and did not get a chance to meet him, the Daily Mail reports.

Earlier in the day, Mr Corbyn’s claims were dealt a blow when the Republican said he wanted “nothing to do with” the NHS and would not accept it in trade talks.

Speaking at a press conference alongside NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg, Mr Trump said: “I have nothing to do with it, never even thought about it.”

He added: “We have absolutely nothing to do with it and we wouldn’t want to if you handed it to us on a silver platter. We want nothing to do with it.”

The president diverted attention to the US healthcare system which he said had become “very good” since his election and would become “phenomenal” if he wins a second term in the White House in 2020.

9.58am update: Swinson turns to youth issues in bid to whip up votes

Meanwhile SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon will be joined by MSP Owen Thompson at a campaign event in Edinburgh.

Jeremy Corbyn will be focusing on the East Midlands today.

8.35am update: Johnson’s drive to win back Tory majority involves gruelling 16-hour days

With only a week to go until Britons head to the ballot box, the prime minister is stepping up his campaign to win back the Tory majority lost by Theresa May in 2017.

Mr Johnson keeps his energy up on his 16-hour days on the campaign trail by kicking off his day with a bowl of porridge.

He also consumes plenty of coffee and snacks on flapjacks, according to The Sun’s Day in the Life diary.

The prime minister’s day starts at 6.10am when he wakes up and takes his dog Dilyn for a walk.

And the day ends with a brief indulgence of Greek poetry to help him wind down before bedtime.

8.07am update: Johnson denies he is dodging Trump snaps

Boris Johnson has batted away the suggestion that he is deliberately avoiding being photographed alongside Donald Trump.

The prime minister is thought to be keen to avoid any pictures of the pair together with just one week to go until the election in a bid to avoid any damage to his campaign.

Mr Johnson told reporters outside the Watford hotel: “I’m going to be photographed with every possible leader at NATO and we’re having a very successful meeting.”
